Thai Jasmine Rice (Hom Mali) is famous worldwide for its delicate floral aroma, slight stickiness, and soft, tender texture. It is the perfect companion to everything from spicy curries to stir-fried basil.
While it seems simple, cooking rice perfectly is an art. If you want to achieve that restaurant-quality fluffy texture at home, follow this easy, foolproof guide!
Ingredients & Tools
1 cup Thai Jasmine rice
1.25 to 1.5 cups water (depending on your preference for softness)
A rice cooker or a heavy-bottomed pot with a lid
Step-by-Step Instructions
Rinse the rice: Place the rice in a bowl and cover with water. Gently swish the rice with your fingers, then drain the cloudy water. Repeat this process 2–3 times until the water runs mostly clear. This removes excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming gummy.
Measure the water: Place the rinsed rice into your rice cooker or pot. Add the fresh water.
Pro Tip: A common Thai household measurement is the "first knuckle" rule—the water level should reach the first knuckle of your index finger when placed on top of the rice.
Soak (Optional): If you have time, let the rice soak in the water for 15–20 minutes before turning on the heat. This helps the grains cook evenly.
Cook:
Rice Cooker: Simply turn it on and let it do the work!
Stovetop: Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat to the lowest setting. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and simmer for 15–18 minutes. Do not peek!
Rest: Once the rice is cooked (and the cooker clicks off), let it rest, covered, for at least 10 minutes. This allows the steam to distribute evenly and creates that perfect, fluffy texture.
Fluff: Use a rice paddle or a fork to gently fluff the rice before serving. This releases extra moisture and keeps the grains separate.
